The Greenwave
Tradition
The Fort Myers High School wrestling program, known as the Greenwave, represents one of Florida's most historically successful and enduring high school wrestling dynasties. The program's core mission aligns with the school's general athletic philosophy: to use the rigor of wrestling to foster lifelong learning, integrity, teamwork, and a strong work ethic in its student-athletes.
This commitment has translated into decades of elite performance, including four FHSAA State Championships (1978, 1979, 1987, 1998) and five State Runner-Up finishes. The program's success is deeply tied to the Fort Myers Wrestling Club, which has historically operated as the youth feeder system. The club's mission is to introduce and develop aspiring wrestlers with the advanced technique, discipline, and competitive mentality needed to sustain the Greenwave's dominance at the high school level. This continuity, established by long-time coaches like Hall of Famer Gary Freis, has ensured that the high school team maintains a consistently high competitive standard, regularly competing for District, Regional, and State honors. The combined efforts of the high school team and the wrestling club ensure that the Greenwave tradition remains a powerful force in Southwest Florida sports.
